Course schedule

Textbook:     Essential Calculus. Early Transcendentals   by James Stewart, published by Thomson Brooks/Cole in 2007.

Homework policy:

• Homework will be assigned twice per week and due at the beginning of the lecture each Monday. Late homework will NOT be accepted.
• It is very important that you attempt the problems by yourself first. The effort you spend on homework will help to consolidate/improve your understanding, which will make you better prepared for the exams. Consulting with others are encouraged, but only after your own serious attempts. Two lowest homework scores will be dropped.
• You do not need to type your answers. But you should write legibly, and write your solutions in a connected, step-by-step manner, with explanatory sentences if necessary. Writing down only the final answer is not a good practice and therefore not acceptable.
• Both odd-numbered and even-numbered problems will be assigned. For the odd-numbered problems, you should try them first and then verify your answers against the answers given in Appendix E. (Note that answers to most of the odd-numbered problems are given in Appendix E.)
  You need to turn in answers to all assigned problems. The even-numbered problems will always be graded, but the odd-numbered problems will be graded selectively.
• Occasionally there are optional problems, you will get extra credits if you work on them.

Math TA help sections:   Monday through Thursday, 4:30--7:30 pm, at Clements Hall, Room 225.

Exams:     There will be three midterm exams (in-class, 50 minutes). All students are expected to take exams on time . Exceptions are granted only with acceptable reasons and with permission from the instructor. No calculators, books, lectures notes are allowed in in-class exams. There will be a 3-hour comprehensive final on a university scheduled date.

• August 29, Friday:   Last day to enroll, add courses or drop courses without grade record or tuition billing.
• September 10, Wednesday:   Last day to declare pass/fail, no credit or first-year repeated course grading options. Last day to request excused absence for observance of a religious holiday.
• November 5, Wednesday:   Last day to drop a course.
• October 13-14, Monday and Tuesday:   Fall break;   November 27-28, Thursday- Friday: University Holiday -- Thanksgiving.
• December 5, Friday:   Last day of instruction for this course.
• Final exam:   Location: Dallas Hall 142. Time: December 10th, Wednesday, 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM
