Assigned Reading:
The casebook is HEALTH
LAW (5th ed.,
West) by Barry Furrow et al. Handouts are identified in the
syllabus and are available in the Faculty
Reception Area or by download from the Web.
- Attendance, Participation. Attendance
is required. If a student is absent an unreasonable number of times, I
reserve the right and sole discretion to exclude the student from the course or
to reduce the
student's final grade under section
III.G.1
of the School of Law Bulletin. As a rule of thumb, six absences (i.e., two
weeks' worth) are yours to take without explanation or excuse. After
that, exam rules apply (absences will be permitted only for serious illness or a
death in the immediate family).
- If you are late coming to class, the recorded absence can be
wiped out if you (i) participate in class discussion that day and
(ii) alert me at the end of class that you are here and that you did
participate.
- If you will be absent to observe a religious
holiday, please let me know in writing (by email or note) in advance
so it will not count as an absence.
- Generally, court appearances for one of the
school's live-client clinics are excused, but if this applies to you, you need
to tell me, in advance if possible.
- If you know you will be absent for an
arraignment (yours or someone you know), for
a heart
bypass operation (someone you know; your own bypass operation
would count as an excused absence), or because you're trying to
qualify
for the World Poker Tour, plan ahead and don't use up all of your permitted
absences early in the semester.
- Students Who Have a
Disability.
Dedman Law School
provides equal educational opportunities to all. If you
need academic accommodations for a disability (either in class or
for an examination), you must contact Ms. Rebecca Marin,
Coordinator, Services for Students with Disabilities (214.768.4557),
to verify the disability and to establish eligibility for
accommodations. In the law school, these accommodations are
administered by the Assistant Dean for Students, Martin Camp.
It may be useful to consult Dean Camp to discuss your needs prior to
contacting Ms. Marin.
- Final Grade
& Exam.
Your grade for the course
will be based upon a final examination.
The final examination will be a three-hour, open-book exam
on Wednesday, December 14, at 8:30 a.m. You may
bring into the exam room your casebook and all class handouts, as well as your own class
notes and course outline (including any outline you have prepared with other members of
this class); no other materials may be consulted during the examination.
- E-mail, Listserv & Web Site.
I strongly encourage everyone to have an e-mail account and before the end
of Add/Drop to sign onto the
discussion list established for this class:
healthlaw-mayo.

The discussion list
is useful for Q&As
throughout the semester. It will also be the out-of-class
medium by which I will communicate class-related information, such as changes in reading
assignments or class cancellations, so it pays to check your e-mails regularly.
The course web pages start here: http://faculty.smu.edu/tmayo/heal.htm. In
addition to the syllabus (including all additions and revisions), you can also find a link
to a page of web-based research resources that should add to your understanding of the
issues we will be studying.
- Cell Phones, Pagers.
Please respect your classmates by turning off your cell phones and
pagers before class. If you must leave them on, please switch to the
vibrate mode. If you leave class to return a page or to take a cell
call, please do not disrupt the class a second time by returning the room
before the end of the hour.
-
Office Hours.
TThF 11am-12 noon. You can drop in, sign up on the sheet on my door
(preferred), call (214.768.3767) for an appointment, or e-mail
me. I am also generally around school most other times, so if
the office hours don't fit your schedule, we can arrange to meet at
another time.
