Beta/Alpha/Beta

A motif found in many proteins with parallel beta-sheets.

The motif illustrated in a beta-barrel protein, one domain of Triose Phosphate Isomerase

This protein contains a central region of 8 parallel beta-strands, forming a cylindrical sheet, surrounded by 8 connecting alpha-helices.

A beta/alpha/beta motif at the N-terminus is shown in red. Note the handedness of the connection.

2 beta/alpha/beta motifs at the N-terminus are shown in red and yellow.

The motif illustrated in a twisted open sheet protein, Flavodoxin

This protein contains a central region of 5 parallel beta-strands, forming a twisted sheet, surrounded by 4 connecting alpha-helices.

2 beta/alpha/beta motifs are shown in red and yellow. Note the characteristic right-handedness of the connections.
