Third Essay AssignmentNew Option (as of 11-13-2007): students may (a) carry out this assignment as originally specified in the Syllabus or (b) may elect not to write this third essay. If the second option is selected, then the final exam will count as 40% of the course grade. Contact your instructor if you have any questions.Instructions1. Your essay is due at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, 4 December. Unless otherwise prohibited by your section instructor, late papers will be accepted, but will penalized one letter grade for each day after the due date (e.g., B to C). No exceptions to this policy will be granted unless there is a legitimate (documented) excuse. Papers must be handed to your instructor. 2. Your essay should be no more than five pages in length. 3. Please follow the instructions found in the “Format for Out-of-Class Papers” found on pages xi-xii of the SourceBook. Review those instructions and the assignment with care. Your essay should open with a “thesis paragraph” which presents the major ideas of your analysis; it should be a summary of that analysis. 4. Define the terms you use. Be sure to explain important terms, concepts, and ideas to support your major points with specific factual and/or documentary evidence, e.g., citations.
Assignment1. The general topic for this essay is: Industrialization, Europeanization, and Revitalization Movements. 2. Give attention to the definition of a revitalization movement included in Mr. Phinney’s handout on November 6. A more extended definition is to be found on the course web site: Wallace, “Recurrent Patterns in Social Movements.” This article should be cited as Wallace, On Line. No page number is needed. You may also use an abbreviated form: Wallace, OL. After pondering the definition re-read Wallace’s “Handsome Lake Religion” and review your notes on the film version of Shaw’s Major Barbara.
