Assignments and Grading:

(note: unexcused late assignments will be penalized one full grade per day.)

1) In-class open-book and open-notes quizzes (a total of 15%) -- 10 pts each = 150 pts -- to be given without notice.

-- 15 of approx. 18 short (3 minutes) "objective" quizzes, based on assigned lectures, videos, readings, etc. (each = 1%).  [note: only the top 15 of the approx. 18 scores will be counted. No make-up quizzes will be given, but medical and other appropriate excuses will be honored, with adequate documentation.]

2) Take-home Mid-term exam (10% for each response, for a total of 20%) -- 100 pts + 100 pts = 200 pts -- due in class at 2:00 p.m., 6 March (Thursday before Spring Break). 

-- writing 2 of 3 assigned essays (4 pp. double-spaced for each answer); The questions will be handed out in class on 25 February, and subsequently posted to this web site.  Late submissions will be penalized 10% (10 pts) per day for each question that is late, not counting weekends.

3) Monograph (case study)  Review/Reflection (15%) -- 150 pts-- Due no later than 15 April at class.  Late submissions will be penalized 10% (15 pts) per day late, not counting weekends.

-- read one book from a list to be provided by Prof. Kemper and write a review/reflection (3 pp. double spaced). NOTE: for this review/reflection assignment, you cannot report on one of the monographs already assigned to all students enrolled in the class. 4) Tour of Dallas (15% for each Team grade) -- 150 pts -- The written report will be due no later than 22 April (in class at 2:00 p.m.).

 -- in teams of three (3) or four (4) persons, find, describe, and reflect on assigned places (and the routes between them) in a written report (4 pages double spaced) based on your observations and the information (and photos, if your wish) related to the experience.  You must do two of the three lists (no mixing and matching!) provided on the "Tour of Dallas" link within this web site (see TOUR OF DALLAS).  Late submissions will be penalized 10% (15 pts) per day late, not counting weekends.

5) Community Service Project (15%)  -- 150 pts -- Due no later than 29 April at class.

-- this should be carried out individually through appropriate SMU offices in consultation with Prof. Kemper.  In all cases, a written report (3 pp. double spaced) must be submitted to document your experience and reflect your learnings about culture and diversity in American life (based on  from 12 to 15 hours first-hand involvement).  Late submissions will be penalized 10% (15 pts) per day late, not counting weekends.

6) Take-home final exam (10% for each response, for a total of 20%) -- 100 pts + 100 pts = 200 pts

-- writing 2 of 3 assigned essays (3 pp. double-spaced for each answer); due on the date (tba) of the scheduled final exam for TuTh 2-3:20 courses. Late submissions will be penalized 10% (10 pts) per day for each question that is late, not counting weekends.

A student's overall course grade will be determined by the total points achieved, as follows:

A = 934 to 1000

A- = 900 to 933

B+ = 867 to 899

B = 834 to 866

B- = 800 to 833

C+ = 767 to 799

C = 734 to 766

C- = 700 to 733

D+ = 667 to 699

D = 634 to 666

D- = 600 to 633

F = below 600
