Secured Transactions [This is a chapter in a book on the law of the United States
prepared for the National Law Center for Inter-American Free Trade in Tucson. The chapter will
be published in Spanish translation for a Mexican audience.]

International Commercial Transactions: 1998 ([This is my annual contribution to the
Uniform Commercial Code survey issue of the Business Lawyer, a publication of the American
Bar Association Section of Business Law. I have published survey articles for 1995-1997.]

Changing Contract Practices in the Light of the U.N. Sales Convention and the UNIDROIT
Principles [This paper is an up-dated text of a generic paper I have prepared on the Sales
Convention and the UNIDROIT Principles. It was prepared for presentation during a course
sponsored by Insight Information on January 28, 1999, in New York City.]

Eritrean Civil Code, Title XV ("Contracts Relating to Assignment of Rights") of Book V
("Special Contracts") [This work is part of my ongoing work on the Eritrean Civil Code.]
Research

My principal short-term work is drafting parts of the Eritrean Civil Code.

Professor John A. Spanogle (National Law Center, George Washington University) and I are
under contract with West to prepare a casebook on the U.N. Sales Convention. The manuscript
is due at the publishers in May 1999.

Professors Louis Del Duca (Dickinson), Egon Guttman (American), Bill Henning (Missouri),
Fred Miller (Oklahoma) and I have a contract from Anderson Publishing Company to publish
course materials for Secured Transactions (U.C.C. Art. 9). The manuscript is tentatively due
October 1, 1999.

I have committed to preparing a history of the Uniform Commercial Code. I spent several days
during the spring semester working in the Archives of the University of Pennsylvania where the
American Law Institute papers are stored.

[U.S.] Commercial and Consumer Law [I lectured for nine hours on June 10-11, 1999,
to the participants in the Academy of American and International Law, an annual program
sponsored by the International and Comparative Law Center of the Southwestern Legal
Foundation in Dallas.]

Constructing an Appropriate Commercial Law Foundation [This lecture was delivered on
June 5, 1999, as part of a conference on "Challenges of the New International Financial
Architecture: Lessons from East Asia" at the University of Hong Kong. The conference launched
the Asian Institute of International Financial Law.]

Draft UNCITRAL Receivables Financing Convention [This presentation was part of a
panel on "International Secured Transactions," at the 32nd annual Uniform Commercial Code
Institute on April 23, 1999, in Chicago.]

Constructing a Commercial Law Infrastructure [This was a presentation at the 6th
Annual
Conference of the International Law Review Association of SMU on "Law-Based Nature of the
New International Financial Infrastructure" held March 27, 1999 in Dallas.]

Proposed UNCITRAL Convention on Assignment in Receivables Financing [This was a
panel presentation at the Roundtable Symposium on "Cross-Border Secured Financing"
sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania Journal of International Economic Law on March 19,
1999 in Philadelphia.]

Section on Africa at the annual meeting of the Association of American Law Schools, January 9,
1999, in New Orleans.]

June 4-5, 1999: Conference on "Challenges of the New International Financial Architecture:
Lessons from East Asia" at the University of Hong Kong. [I delivered a paper at this conference.
The conference launched the Asian Institute of International Financial Law and was part of the
celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Faculty of Law of the University of Hong Kong.]

May 31-June 3, 1999: Annual meeting of the United Nations Commission on International Trade
Law, Vienna [I was a member of the U.S. delegation to the annual meeting. I advised on
proposed international commercial arbitration projects. As one of the two U.S. National
Correspondents, I also attended a meeting of the national correspondents of the UNCITRAL
CLOUT (Case Law on UNCITRAL Texts) network.]

January 16, 1999: meeting of the Uniform Commercial Code committee of the Texas State Bar,
Dallas [I participated as a member of the UCC committee and as a member of the sub-committee
on UCC Art. 9 (Secured Transactions). As a result of the sub-committee report, the UCC
committee has recommended that Texas adopt the newly-revised Article 9.]

January 7-10, 1999: annual meeting of Association of American Law Schools, New Orleans [At
the meeting I represented S.M.U. at the AALS House of Delegates and was a panelist on the
program sponsored by the Section on Africa. I stepped down as chair of the Section on Africa
but continue on the nominating and executive committees of the Section.]

Faculty Senate: As a member elected by the Law School, I attended meetings of the
Senate.

Faculty Senate, All University Finance Committee: As chair of the committee, I reported
to the Faculty Senate on the University's 1998-1999 budget and its draft 1999-2000 budget.

Tower Center, Executive Committee: As a member of the executive committee, I
attended a meeting of the committee and a meeting of the board, as well as several functions
sponsored by the Center.

Town & Gown: As a member of the executive committee, I attended its two meetings
this spring semester. At its April meeting, I was elected as president-elect for the academic year
2000-2001.

Colophon (Friends of S.M.U. Libraries): As a member of the board of directors, I
attended several meetings of Colophon. I chaired the Scholarship Committee, which made its first
annual scholarship award to a library staff member enrolled in library school.

Collegium: I attended two meetings of the Collegium for chaired professors.

Ethics colloquy: I participted in several meetings of the Ethics colloquy organized by
Charles Curran for the School of Theology.
