Course Outline

1. Scope of Course

We will examine admiralty jurisdiction and procedure; federal-state relations; maritime liens; Harter Act and Carriage of Goods by Sea Act; charter parties. Time permitting, we may examine other topics covered in the casebook.

2. Course Materials

Nicholas J. Healy & David J. Sharpe, CASES AND MATERIALS ON ADMIRALTY (2d ed. 1986). There will be photocopied supplementary materials.

3. Class Attendance, Assignments and Preparation

I expect students to attend class regularly and to be prepared to discuss the assigned materials in class.

4. Office Hours

My office is in Room 228, Storey Hall. Subject to rescheduling, my office hours for the spring semester will be Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. You may leave messages with my secretary (tel. 768-2639) or on my voice mail (tel. 768-2575).

5. Final Examination

I will administer a three-hour examination at 8:30 a.m. on April 30. The examination may include up to one hour of short-answer questions. During the examination you may consult any published or written materials other than materials checked out from the law library. Your grade for the final examination will be your grade for the course.
