General Information

"The MAA Student Chapters program was launched in January 1989 to encourage students to continue study in the mathematical sciences, provide opportunity to meet with other students interested in mathematics, interact with prominent mathematicians at national meetings, and provide career information in the mathematical sciences. There are no scholastic requirements; students need not have a particular class standing or grade point average and they need not be mathematics majors."

The first stage of the birth of the SMU student chapter was the mailing of applications to the national office of the MAA in Washington, D.C. on November 29, 2000. The three students who had gotten their applications in by that date were J. Blake Norvell, Michael J. Shearn, and Jon M. Neill. The next mailing included the applications of April Kramer and Courtney Keel.

The chapter became official on January 12, 2001. Notification arrived from Thomas W. Rishel, Associate Executive Director, on January 16, 2001.

In the spring of 2007, the math club began to show signs of life.  Ms Laura Layton organized a meeting of students and faculty to discuss math clubs, in general.  The meeting took place in 126 Clements Hall at 3:00 p.m. on Monday January 29th.
