Regan’s Argument for Animal Rights

(1) All humans have inherent value equally, whatever their differences.

(2) This equal inherent value gives all humans an equal right to be treated with respect.

(3) Because humans are so different, their equal inherent value must be based on simply being a “subject of a life.” (SOL)

(4) But many animals are SOLs too

Therefore,

(5) Many animals have inherent value and rights, both equal to that of human beings.
