We are investigating the molecular mechanisms of the aging process using the fruit fly Drosphila melanogaster as a model system. In particular, we are interested in understanding how Dietary Restriction prolongs the life span of fruit flies and the genes mediating these effects.

We have recently identified the Drosophila ortholog of the tumor suppressor p53 as a crucial mediator of the longevity effects of Calorie Restriction. We are now investigating in molecular detail how this tumor suppressor exerts its role in longevity determination and which molecular pathways are engaged by it.

By understanding Calorie Restriction in molecular detail, we aim to develop pharmacologic interventions that may provide health benefits against aging and aging-related diseases, such as diabetes or Alzheimer's Disease.
