There were two noteworthy exceptions to the "standard" suburban TV family.  The first was the show "I Love Lucy" starring Lucille Ball and her Cuban-born husband, Desi Arnaz (as Ricky Ricardo).  The show was set in New York City.  Ricky was a bandleader in a night club.  The basic set was an apartment in the city:

 

 

The second was a show called the "Honeymooners."  The locale was an urban setting (presumably New York) but what distinguished this show it was an urban working-class setting.  The show starred Jackie Gleason as Ralph Kramden who was a bus driver.  Ralph's best friend was Ed Norton, played by Art Carney, who worked for the city sewer department.  Note the "grittiness" of the sets:
