Sweet Talk

“You know, I just don't get it, I just don't understand how she can be so goddamn complacent about this, I mean, it's the Washington International Horse Show. And she's happy to be here, and I know she's nervous, she's always nervous, but she just acts like there was no possibility of her not qualifying. I don't know. Maybe it's because I barely qualified for Harrisburg. But I was so excited and surprised and she just seems so blase about the fact that she's here.

"I mean, I guess that it would have been weirder for her not to qualify than to qualify because she has been doing so well on Roany, but it's her first year on Roany, and her first year on a horse instead of a pony, and she's one of the youngest people here, and she acts like it was all certain. God. I don't know what I'll do if she wins. I don't know. I want her to do well, but I also wouldn't mind if she did really badly, you know? It's just that I've worked so hard, and I've finally made it, qualifying for Harrisburg, and doing so well, and she's hardly worked at all. She hardly rode all winter because she thought it was too cold, and she didn't feel like it. And I was out there every single day. You know that. Not that she needed to be out there all the time. Not like me. If I wasn't constantly riding Willy, he wouldn't jump. Well, he still tends not to jump at times, but you know what I mean.

"It's just that she's had all the luck. First with Tilly, when. all she had to do was sit, and that pony would do everything. She barely had to learn the course. I swear, that pony watched everyone else and learned the course for himself. It was obscene. And now, Roany. All she has to do is point and kick and Roany will win. Can you imagine if she had to try and show Willy? He would dump. her in two seconds. But of course, everyone thinks she is a better rider than me, because she wins more, and she does Jumpers. It's ridiculous how impressed everyone is with the fact that she has to go faster than everyone else to win. It's a hell of a lot harder to ride a hunter and look good while jumping and not just kick your horse and go. Can you imagine Lyndsey trying to ride subtly?

“The thing that makes me so crazy is that all everyone talks about is 'little Lyndsey Robinson and her cute little horse Sweet Talk.' Even Roany's show name is perfect. Everyone always thinks the name Sweet Talk is so cute. And they're all so impressed that she made it to Washington, because it is the International Horse Show. The fact that I qualified for Harrisburg means nothing to them. Never mind that it is the Pennsylvania National Horse Show. But people from DC have heard of Washington because they live here, and unless they are really into the horse show circuit they haven't heard of Harrisburg. And they think that because Washington is called International, that it is a bigger deal than Harrisburg because Harrisburg is only National. Never mind that it makes no difference. They think she is better, and she’s not. You know she's not.

“The thing that also annoys me is the way she treats Roany. Well, not treats her, because she takes perfectly good care of her, but if Lyndsey makes a mistake, which contrary to popular belief, she does pretty often, she blames Roany. I can't believe she went so far to say that Roany needed to be 'retrained' that time at Penn State when Roany was stopping. It was completely Lyndsey's fault. But she always blames Roany. Of course when she wins or does well then it is all because of Lyndsey. Because she. is such a good rider. God, I don't know. You know, it's just not fair. This is my last year that I get to compete as a junior, or compete at all for that matter before I go to college, and she has, what, three years left? I would Just like people to realize that going to Harrisburg to the Pennsylvania National Horse Show and getting ninth out of the top forty horses in the country in Small Juniors, which is a hell of a lot more prestigious division than Children's Jumpers, is a really big deal! But no, Lyndsey gets to be the little perfect rider, the one that everyone goes to watch, because it's so close, unlike Pennsylvania, and she walks around like it's an everyday occurrence to get into Washington your first year on a new horse.”
