JOAN OF ARC AND SPIRITUALITY

Call for Essays for a volume edited by Ann Astell and Bonnie Wheeler

We are especially interested in essays (20-25 pages) on the following topics: (1) the spirituality of the historical Joan of Arc (her sacramentality, her devotions, her asceticism, her pacificism and militarism as aspects of her "liberation" theology/spirituality, her chastity, her spiritual models, her relationship to God and the saints; (2) the place of Joan of Arc in the spirituality of other acknowledged saints and/or mystics (e.g., Therese of Lisieux, Simone Weil); and (3) the power of Joan's story to inspire women, artists, and social activists and to affect their spiritualities.

The major focus of the collection (2/3 of the essays) will concern Joan of Arc in her own time. We welcome contributions from all disciplines–from theologians, historians, literary critics, and scholars of the creative arts (music, dance, film, painting, sculpture).

Send abstracts by email to Ann Astell at AAstell1@sla.purdue.edu by April 15, 2001 or by snailmail to the address below. On the basis of the abstracts the editors will welcome full-text submissions (in two copies). The complete text of essays submitted to the collection will be due October 1, 2001.
