1. The midterm examination will be on Friday, 17 July in 131 DLSB.
2. The exam will consist of two parts of equal worth. Part One will be administered from noon to 12:50. By 12:50 bluebooks must be given to your instructor. Part Two will be administered from 1 - 1:50 p.m. 3. All of the material (including video presentations) covered up to the mid-term should be reviewed. Be sure to spend time reviewing “Key Terms and the “Modes of Production.” Review all "grids" that you have made. We will not require you to provide precise dates (although we encourage their use), but we do expect that you have a sense of relative chronology; i.e., that you know that Columbus made his voyages to the New World before Luther posted his 95 Theses. 4. In both parts of the exam you will be asked to answer specific questions. Do so. 5. Part One of the mid-term will allow you to demonstrate your knowledge of the impact of the Reformation and the Age of Discovery and Conquest on the institutions of both Europe and the Americas. Some important terms and concepts to be considered: Reformation, Luther, Calvin, Anglicanism, Anabaptists, pluralism, Bull Unam Sanctam, institutional domains, the Reformed Tradition, Henry VIII, theocracy, the confessional state, mercantilism, religious syncretism, the Aztec Empire, the Inca Empire, mita, the Columbian exchange, Las Casas. 7. Part Two of the mid-term will ask you to demonstrate an ability to link Thomas More's Utopia to a broader discussion of institutions. Important terms and concepts may include: the Aztec Empire, the Inca Empire, Calvin, institutional domains, mercantilism, guilds, class, Corporatism, Age of Exploration and Conquest, tributary mode of production, Bull Unam Sanctam. In preparing to write this question give particular attention to the institutional domains of both Europe and the Americas. |
