Anth 6306 Anthropology and Education

Final Exam Questions -- Spring 2007

Instructions:

Write two essays selected from the three questions provided below – each 4 to 5 pages (1,000-1,250 words); due at 405 Heroy (Kemper's office) no later than 5:30 p.m. on 3 May.  Preferably, write one answer in English and the other in Spanish.  Please turn in the two answers stapled separately.  Put your name on the BACK of each answer and nowhere else on the papers.

Question #1

Norma Gonzalez and others have written about the "Funds of Knowledge" approach to linking instructional goals to students' lives and their community.  You have just been appointed the Director of a new "Funds of Knowledge" initiative in your school district.  Your budget is $250,000 for Year 1, $500,000 for Year 2, and $1,000,000 for Year 3 and each year thereafter. In this essay, describe your plan for implementing the Funds of Knowledge approach throughout the district. Be sure to discuss expected resistance and support as well as anticipated outcomes by the end of Year 5.  Be sure to cite appropriate readings, lectures, videos, and other related materials in your answer.

You have been given a collection of articles (Practicing Anthropology (vol. 24, no. 3, summer 2002) "Latinos in the Midwest."  Based on your reading of these articles and your knowledge of the D/FW area, compare the educational situation for the Hispanic population in the Midwest with that in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area.  Be sure to cite appropriate readings, lectures, videos, and other related materials in your answer.

Romo, Harriett D. (1999) Reaching Out: Best Practices for Educating Mexican-Origin Children and Youth. Charleston, West Virginia: Clearinghouse on Rural Education and Small Schools.

Please discuss what you consider to be the two key ideas in each volume and their relative worth for you as a teacher in bilingual education.
