Study Guide for Midterm Examination

Instructions:

Part I -- Objective Section

This section will include a variety of multiple choice, fill-in, and True/False questions.  These are familiar formats to you.

Part II -- Essays

Here are four study questions from which I will select three questions (and you will be able to choose two) at the midterm exam in class on 28 February:

1) Sixty years have passed since the 1948 "Universal Declaration of Human Rights."  Last year, the United Nations approved a "Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples."  Thus, these two documents provide the "book ends" for a long period in which the struggles of indigenous peoples were considered in the U.N.  Discuss this documentary history in the light of changing global political and economic trends in the past-WWII era.

2) Concerns with indigenous rights began long before the twnety-first century.  Consider some of the major milestones in this controversial history and discuss their relevance for today's struggles on behalf of indigenous peoples.

3) Territorial rights often are at the heart of the conflicts between indigenous peoples and nation states.  Why is this the case, and what strategies do indigenous peoples and governments develop to deal with land issues? Consider at least three cases in your answer.

4) NAGPRA is an acronym for an important piece of U.S. law.  Discuss its main features and its implications for the lives and deaths of indigenous peoples.
