ANTH 3346-701C

Guide for the "Tour of Dallas"

GRADING AND DEADLINE:

Grading for Team Reports:  10% for the oral report and 10% for the written report (see course syllabus).  All team members will receive the same grade, unless one or more student/s do(es) not carry out the assignment in a responsible manner.  Problems in this regard must be brought to the instructor’s attention before the due date.

Deadline:  Oral presentations will be made in class on December 1st.  Each Team will be permitted approximately 15-20 minutes for the in-class presentation.  You are encouraged to use PowerPoint or other visuals along with your spoken presentation. Final written Team Reports will be due at the beginning of class on the same evening, December 1st.

Note:  the SMU Honor Code applies to your work on this assignment.

INSTRUCTIONS:

This is sort of a visual “scavenger hunt” in which you need to “find” the items on the list.  You need to document your “findings” by the descriptions (and optional pictures) that you provide in your Team Report (4-5 pages double-spaced).  Beyond providing this “evidence,” your Report should also contain your group’s “analysis” of the overall experience and what it has told your Team about culture and diversity in Dallas.

To receive full credit for this assignment, your Team must select at least two (2) of the three (3) Lists and complete at least sixteen (16) of the twenty (20) items for each of the lists.  [Note:  you may not “mix and match” items among the three Lists.]  This means that you must “find” at least 32 places.

The route that you follow for each List is to be of your Team’s own design.  You should include as an Appendix to your Report a map that shows your actual routes and their sequences.  Note:  Your Team should consist of four (4) or five (5) persons, though you may choose to include a non-class member to be your driver.  Keep in mind that you can do the assignment in parts on different days, as your schedules permit.  Further Note:  Multiple pages from MapQuest or the equivalent, showing each different step of your travel, does not constitute “a map.”

You may collaborate with other Teams in selecting items and designing your route, but each Team is responsible for its own observations, written report, and in-class presentation.  You will want to consult maps and other guides in designing your route and gathering data about the items/sites before you carry out the assignment.
